Just the funds to make it happen

Build for a Cure

McDonald Jones Homes, the Wearn Brothers Group and Austral Bricks  joined forces to Build for a Cure for childhood cancer.

A brand new, fully furnished, four-bedroom home was built from the ground up in Glenmore Park NSW during International Childhood Cancer Awareness Month (September 2014). The house was then auctioned in October 2014, with proceeds donated to Children’s Cancer Institute to fund vital medical research to save the lives of all children with cancer.

Why Our Work Matters

Many people aren’t aware that childhood cancer is different from adult cancer and requires tailored treatments. Historically, large pharmaceutical companies generally don’t focus their research on drug discoveries for childhood cancers, concentrating instead on the larger adult cancer market.

As the only independent medical research institute in Australia wholly dedicated to childhood cancer, Children’s Cancer Institute’s role is vital. Because, despite our progress, cancer still kills more Australian children than any other disease.

This week’s #FridayFighter is Jayden. He was only 18 months old when he was diagnosed with brain cancer. The treatment needed to save his life nearly killed him, but he survived. Today, his family lives in fear that his cancer might return. If it does, there is no currently-known treatment that can help him. Jayden's story is why our research is so important: bit.ly/Jaydens_Story ... See MoreSee Less

Diana Gavin GilkesMy son died at 34 from a brain tumor. He had had it all his life - from conception. If we had known what the problem was when he was younger he would not have survived the treatment given then. I am so glad we had him in our family as long as we did. He always had problems but achieved so much. Miss him heaps.2 days ago   ·  33

Because of childhood cancer, kids like Charlie are no longer with us. Research must put a stop to this awful disease.

This week we are part of the ANR Congress where leading international minds are coming together to hear about the latest developments in neuroblastoma research: bit.ly/ANR_Neuroblastoma

Melissa CarrThank you everyone for your comments and support. I am Charlie's mum Mel and can't tell you how heartbreaking it is to live without my beautiful brave little soul, I miss her unbearably. She would be thrilled by all the support, love and donations people are giving as Charlie's biggest wish in life was to cure kids of cancer, unfortunately it is too late for our beautiful girl, but she would not want us to stop trying - for all the other kids. Can you imagine riding more than 600km from Perth to Kalgoorlie? Now think about doing that on a Penny Farthing!? That's what we call dedication!

Thank you to Bright Blue - Police Commissioner's Fund for Sick Kids who have put together this incredible event to raise money for our research. Check out: Pennies for a Cure for more details.

Neuroblastoma Australia
Today we'd like to recognise Michaela & the amazing team Neuroblastoma Australia who have been out in the torrential rain since 6am this morning trying to see if their Run2Cure event which raises money for research could still go ahead.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: for everyone who has registered, Run2Cure will not go ahead this weekend due to the extreme weather conditions in Syd.

Unfortunately the decision has been made that the conditions are unsafe for the event to proceed. We can't thank Michaela & her team enough for the hundreds of hours they have put in to this event & the many years of incredible support and funding they have provided us Xx
